Gone with the Wind – Compliance vs Performance in High Airflow Data Center Environments
Abstract: Fire detection is a crucial element of any fire protection strategy and is often relied upon providing first line of defense triggering sequential systems, including suppression. Transitions within the data center industry with respect to cooling configurations and construction innovations are effectively outpacing codes & standards. Relying on compliance with fire codes that are largely focused on life safety presents risk. Higher than usual airflow velocities, ventilation schemes and construction dynamics challenge the reliable detection of fires early, before damage and disruption. Given these unique challenges there is an increasing emphasis on performance-based approaches that addresses environmental conditions and owners’ business continuity objectives. This presentation provides insight as to the unique challenges the industry faces with respect to reliable fire detection in high airflow environments, and as well discusses performance based fire detection approaches for effective protection of modern day data center facilities.

Steven Joseph’s 30-year career in fire protection has been focused on deployment of detection technologies, He currently holds the position of Director of Market Development for Xtralis focused on applications of smoke detection for mission critical environments. Steven works closely with leading corporations and engineering groups across the Americas consulting
on fire detection practices and application, with designs and specifications being adopted globally. Steven currently serves on NFPA technical committees, which include 72, 76, 318, 805, and is active in various industry associations & organizations including AFAA, FSSA, and SFPE.
